What is it?

A prescription only medicine only available form Doctors for men. Primarily designed to treat benign prostatic growth in men, but now licensed in the UK for male pattern hair loss. It acts by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone. Circulating levels of dihydrotestosterone are reduced by 25-40%.

What does dihydrotestosterone do?

This naturally occurring hormone is one of the causes of male pattern baldness it also makes the prostate gland grow as men age.

What are the results like?

It grows new hair in 55% of men after one year and about 66% of men after two years. 85% of men do not lose any further hair when on treatment. Five year studies have just shown that the hair growing continues to get thicker and thicker.

What side effects does it have?

Low incidence of side effects approx. 2%. Of these 2% main side effects are decreased libido and decreased ejaculate volume. Most side effects usually resolve as the treatment continues.

Are there any other precautions I should take?

Medication should not be handled or consumed by women, as there is a risk that they can cause foetal abnormalities.

There is now good evidence that using finasteride and 4 - 5% minoxidil speeds and enhances the results seen.
